CONTEXT

What is GlobeTrotter?

An app was developed as part of a project for Tata iGNITE Design Challenge 2022 to incentivize users to opt for eco-friendly options for commute by making it cost-friendly.

PROBLEM

Sometimes, booking the appropriate transportation can be a painstakingly long and confusing task made due to the number of apps available. In the hunt for maximum comfort during travel, environmental concerns take a backseat.

SOLUTION

Revolutionizing personal carbon credit trade by creating a decentralized open mobility application that encourages people to opt for eco-friendly transportation options by making it budget-friendly.

This was done by first defining the goals this app was going to tackle -

01

Become the premium open consolidation platform of choice for carbon based mobility services for cities.

02

Spread awareness about sustainable transportation options.

03

Introduce carbon offsets to each individual as a means of reducing carbon footprint.

04

Enable users to make changes in their lifestyle and see their impact in real time.

RESEARCH

I conducted a survey using Google Forms, analyzed the responses and drew inferences

This yielded 5 critical insights on which I based my final redesigns around.

Survey Results

Age group:
23 - 56-year-olds

Location(s):
United Kingdom, United States, United Arab Emirates, India

Inferences:
The problem remains the same for every city in the world. A solution needs to be universal.
They are unable to see a change in their lifestyle impacting the environment in real-time.
They check 3-4 apps to book transportation which is confusing and time-consuming.
Lack awareness about the carbon footprint they are leaving behind or open mobility platforms in general.
They always look for cost-effective solutions.
Doesn’t take emission rate into consideration when looking for options.

Market Analysis helped me scope out available resources

Beckn Protocol was adopted to adhere to open mobility guidelines.

Beckn is an open protocol that enables location-aware local commerce across industries. The protocol is a set of recommendations and rules that outline specific technical standards that can be adopted for an industry, in a region or a market among its participants to enable open interoperable interactions between them.

Yatri was the only other app that existed as open mobility as a service.

Market research led me to conclude no platform exists that integrates open mobility with a sustainable ecosystem.

Two personas were created to base design decisions on.

Possible scenarios under which the app could be used were also brainstormed.

01

Students who don’t own a private vehicle and are concerned about high fuel prices high. Looking for cheaper options to travel.

02

People who have shifted to a new city looking for viable transportation options. Doesn’t own private transportation.

03

People who are not permitted to own a personal vehicle due to ailments and other reasons.

BRAINSTORMING

Low-fidelity and medium-fidelity wireframes were created as part of the ideation process

The screens were created keeping ease of navigation and minimalistic design in mind.

Group 3.png

The main functionality of the app was to make a verified ticket purchase using carbon credits or cash.

User testing was conducted on these wireframes to understand how to enhance user experience.

The flows were changed based on user feedback.

A design guide was created to help maintain consistency throughout

FINAL DESIGNS

The flow was refined to enable users to track their stops and show amenities available nearby. The ticket screen shows how a user’s decision positively impacts the environment.

Track your previous rides, check your carbon credit and update your payment method all within a couple of clicks.

IMPACT

Feasibility of project
The app makes use of existing resources and platforms to bring a novel idea to fruition.
From a business perspective, revolutionizing carbon credits opens new avenues. From a user’s perspective, budget-friendly and credits encourages to use the app frequently.

Sustainability
Saving money is the biggest incentive for people to make lifestyle decisions. The app makes it easy for users to choose eco-friendly options helping them reduce their carbon footprint.

Scalability
Based on the usage of the app, new features and functionality can be introduced periodically.
The app can be developed to make it more accessible. Voice command and hands-free design can be considered.
Carbon credit trade can also be introduced.
