CONTEXT

What is LearnBowl?
  • LearnBowl is an innovative ed-tech company with a mission to empower students to take control of their own learning.

  • With traditional classroom settings becoming more challenging for teachers to meet individual learning needs, LearnBowl aims to bridge the gap by providing a customized supplementary platform for students.

PROBLEM

Teachers often face the challenge of effectively engaging with a large number of students

Individualized learning assessments are often limited to formal tests, making it difficult to grasp students' understanding of different concepts.

SOLUTION

Through the app, teachers can push supplementary resources, including recorded video lessons, to students outside the classroom

Students engage with the content, answer quizzes, and share results with their peers.

Meanwhile, parents and teachers have access to valuable data such as correct vs. wrong answers, the number of attempts, and the overall learning growth of each student.

MY CONTRIBUTION

Full design ownership over the MVP platform
  • As the sole Product Designer, I took full ownership of the core screens for the Minimum Viable Product (MVP) platform.

  • Collaborating closely with the co-founders, I established the app's overall look and feel, ensuring a seamless and user-friendly experience.

  • My responsibilities included design guidelines, creating an intuitive onboarding flow, and creating the main dashboard.

  • The MVP I designed laid a solid foundation for the platform, paving the way for the next designer to continue building upon its success

RESEARCH

To kick off the design process, I conducted stakeholder interviews to gather insights and list the project requirements. One critical question guided my research:

"What piece of information is crucial for me to feel comfortable and get started with the design process?"

Stakeholder Interview

I called both co-founders to get a sense of the big picture of LearnBowl. This includes understanding the current state, future plans, and the exact pages that will be on the platform. These conversations helped me create a feature list that was extremely helpful for me.

To garner student’s attention, The platform needed to be fun, interactive, and provided a sense of achievement.
The students wanted content that was easy to consume and explained in a clear and concise manner.

MY LEARNINGS

Fast-paced nature of a start-up

Before joining, I was taught to follow a rigid, structured design process. But, I had to understand that sometimes there simply isn’t time and resources. For a startup, building out functionality and shipping as fast as possible is the priority.

Communication is key

Each team had different priorities and outcomes they needed to deliver. So, in order to gather useful feedback from them, I needed to present my design decisions tailored to each team's interests.

Advocating for design

Since I was the only designer on the team, I had to advocate for research and be intentional with my design decisions. Tradeoffs and compromises were made, but they were all made for the goal of creating a valuable platform for students.
